The Inherent Skew of Location-Based Social Networking
I like the idea behind location-based social media apps/sites like Foursquare and Gowalla. But the problem with these, in my experience, is that I only think to update my location and status when I’m at a location that is at least slightly boring. In other words, I’m posting my Gowalla status because I’m waiting for a sandwich or a coffee. By contrast, if I am fully engaged, then I am not even thinking about these apps or my iPhone. Instead, I’m being social, dancing, or whatever. But maybe I’m not the target demographic.
